The latest USAID funding freeze is a stark reminder that African organisations must strengthen local fundraising for long-term sustainability. I am proud to have completed the Local Fundraising course with Change the Game Academy, gaining practical skills to mobilise resources from within. We need to be sustainable!
Change the Game Academy has been a game-changer in my journey to empower communities.
After attending the Local Fundraising training in 2022, I became a Mobilising Support trainer the following year.
These tools helped us at AWARD launch people-led initiatives where women’s groups and local CBOs raise their own funds—and use them to mobilise support for social change.
Now, even local governments are stepping in to support.
It’s a powerful cycle: by the community, for the community.
Thanks to CtGA for opening this path.
Change the Game Academy taught us resilience and creativity. Using WhatsApp groups and personalised donor outreach, we exceeded expectations and reinforced the power of local empowerment.
It's CtGA who opened up our eyes and told us:"You don't have to look at the big giant donors, you don't have to look at the big corporates. There's money within the people. After all the tips we gained, we gained the courage to start our own fundraising. Before 100% of our money came from abroad, now we raised Ksh.2 million ourselves and KCDF doubled that, for our program to raise awareness for epilepsy."
