Participatory Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation

Step 5: Map your stakeholders

Inclusive planning tools make our work stronger. Involving the right people, and making logic explicit, sets a project up for success. Participatory stakeholder mapping helps identify who is affected by a project, who has influence, and who should be actively involved. It ensures no key voices are overlooked — whether community groups, government, or local leaders.

A simple way is mapping your stakeholders in a grid: high influence/high interest stakeholders need active involvement. Low influence but high interest stakeholders still need support and voice — often the most marginalised.

  • Based on the rating, map out your stakeholders on a grid classifying them by their influence over your work and by their interest in your work. Do this together with your stakeholders!
  • Place the name of each stakeholder (or group) on the grid.
  • Use this format to create your stakeholder map.
