Summary
Jogo Oasis (the Oasis Game) is a social mobilisation method to help a community formulate its dreams and turn these into realistic plans, which they themselves can execute to improve their neighbourhood and environment.
Groups of scouts are being trained to use this method and subsequently practice in a real community. This particular group set up a camp in order to work with the inhabitants of a certain neighbourhood of Porto Alegre.
Tips and lessons learned
The values which scouting promotes are: youth empowerment, autonomy, learning by practice, commitment to responsiblities. A fundraising action is perfectly in line with these values. Among other things scouts learn to value work and money and become more conscious of the efforts needed to achieve something in life.
Most people are sensitive to social causes, which can be used to make the campaign a success.
The success of a fundraising action highly depends on working together.
Review by Wilde Ganzen Foundation
The União dos Escoteiros do Brasil made the scouts and their families aware of the importance of this new initiative: the Oasis method of community improvement, implemented by scouts. So when they asked for donations to organise a camp so that the scouts could practice what they had learned, they were very successful. They also made a leaflet for a crowdfunding platform. About a quarter of the amount they raised came from this source. The combination of actions worked well in this case and is often a good idea, especially when the actions enforce each other.
