Summary
Tullo Bollo Town did not have appropriate waste collection and disposal systems. As a result people, including children, faced illnesses due to poor sanitation and hygiene. Becho organised community (coffee) meetings to create public awareness on the adverse effects of waste and environmental pollution. Municipal offices, schools, kebele and religious leaders were also involved. It was decided to form waste collector groups to deal with the problem, at the same time offering employment to unemployed women and youth. The town was embellished with plants and several new public toilets were built.

Stakeholder analysis
Which stakeholders (NGO’s, government, private sector) did you identify as allies and how did you involve them?
Tullu Bollo Municipality: is responsible to coordinate the overall activities that can make Tullu Bollo town green and free of waste. The municipality is also expected to assign budget and mobilise resources to establish waste disposal centres.
Tullu Bollo Town Health Office: is expected to counteract the adverse effects of disposing waste inappropriately, causing health problems.
Government and Private schools: are able to teach people through organised clubs and campaigns.
Tullu Bollo Town Water Supply Office: is responsible to ensure access to adequate drinking water is available to the whole community. Besides, the office will provide technical input for waste disposal centre (dry and liquid) construction.
Kebele (smallest administrative unit, similar to a neighbourhood) and religious leaders: will mobilise resources and create awareness in the communities.
Tullu Bollo communities: will implement the designed action plan to make the town green and clean with active participation and full commitment.
All stakeholders mentioned were perceived as allies. Becho CBO has been implementing student led sanitation and school hygiene (SLSSH) programmes. These stakeholders and Becho CBO were interested to translate the experience and achievements of the work done at school level to municipality level.
Which stakeholders did you identify as opponents and why were they opposed?
At this starting level no opponents were identified.
How did you involve your beneficiaries in the stakeholder analysis/campaign?
