Nonviolent Communication (NVC) for NGOs

1. What is Nonviolent Communication (NVC)?

Nonviolent Communication (NVC), developed by Marshall Rosenberg, is a communication approach that fosters empathy, mutual understanding, and conflict resolution. It enables individuals and organizations to express themselves honestly while listening to others with compassion.

At its core, NVC consists of four key components:

  • Observations – Stating facts without judgment or evaluation.
  • Feelings – Expressing emotions rather than interpretations.
  • Needs – Identifying underlying needs that drive feelings.
  • Requests – Making clear, actionable requests rather than demands.

This framework helps NGOs engage more effectively with communities, resolve internal conflicts, and strengthen collaboration.
