Child protection policy

Step 6: Put the policy into practice: prevent harm to children

Your next step is to make sure your organisation’s work processes help minimise the possibility of children being abused by those in positions of trust. Organisations need to make it as difficult as possible for people who want to harm children to have access to them. Strong measures to prevent harm to children should be part of every organisation’s risk assessment and strategy.

Your organisation must have at least:

  • two suitable references being taken up for all representatives who have regular contact with children and evidence of identity and any relevant qualifications are seen
  • a policy on recruitment that applies to everyone who has contact with children, even if the contact is not direct or a part of their job (e.g. police statement for each representative, signed code of conduct)
  • prevention strategies that reflect the fact that abuse may not necessarily be planned in advance
  • basic guidelines on setting up websites, the use of videos and photography of children
